This summer, the annual Mostly Mozart Festival will expand in new directions while continuing to celebrate the extraordinary genius of its namesake composer in performances of several of his landmark works.
The festival, which runs from July 31 through August 25, will explore several themes. The first is a week-long focus on the music of Beethoven, who initially overlapped with Mozart in the Classical style. Spirituality in music, another theme, will be explored in six major choral works, including Mozart’s Requiem. Augmenting these performances will be a visual art installation by the OpenEnded Group that explores the relationship among words, metaphors and languages of sacred music. The festival will also feature Lincoln Center’s composer in residence, Osvaldo Golijov, who will be lending his curatorial vision to concerts of works by Monteverdi and Schubert.
Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra performances will be the heartbeat of the festival. The Mark Morris Dance Group returns with Mozart Dances, which premiered to three sold out houses last summer and will again feature the musical forces of the orchestra, Emmanuel Ax and Yoko Nazaki.
